The concept of medical imaging in not new, in fact it was 122 years ago, when Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen produced the first X-ray image of his wife’s hand. While the picture obviously became famous, it had a curious reaction associated with it, something completely opposite to how patient will react today if they see their X-ray images. Wilhelm’s wife had said, “I’ve seen my death!” While Medical imaging modalities have undergone a significant pace of innovation since then, Wilhelm’s invention has become a significant factor in today’s healthcare continuum. However, the modern era has seen this innovative service shift from revenue generators to cost centers. The reason? Mass amounts of information are produced by Radiology and image-driven workflow service lines, but it is stored as unstructured and non-recognizable data in the form of paragraph text or PDFs. This is of little value to the enterprise health record (EHR) and information systems. In addition, the actions relating to the document are undertaken by the ones who don’t possess capability to comprehend the radiologist’s report, which results in unmeasured clinical and financial impact on the care process. Cerner’s clinical imaging solutions provide a holistic patient record by allowing healthcare institutions to handle all imaging and media content generated in the care process in a seamless way. Not only does the Cerner imaging solution improve operational efficiencies through reduced time to capture, store, access and share clinical media, it also reduces chart review time by delivering a holistic patient record in the EHR. Further, the solutions minimizes Emergency Department (ED) visit duration for cases requiring consultaion with dermatology, wound care or plastic surgery, and also insurance fraud as the banner bar photos provide positive patient identification. In an instance, the company helped Truman Medical (TMC) Centers in reducing clinical workflow steps and helped them save time with its offering, Camera Capture. Clinicians at TMC leveraged an innovative way to capture clinical photographs into their patients’ records. In 2017, the Cerner ITWorks™ client implemented a set of mobile applications, including Camera Capture™, which has allowed staff to work more efficiently, eliminate unnecessary workflow steps and share photos across the care team. Clinical team members no longer needed to search for a shared camera and then find time during their day to manually upload photos to the patient’s chart. The Camera Capture application could be used either on an enterprise device or through a bring your down device (BYOD) option. The photos can be efficiently added into the patient’s electronic chart, stored within the appropriate context and classified in specialty specific folders for enhanced patient care.
